So I blew off a friend's birthday party today because I was embarrassed by my circumstances. It was a nice party idea - held at an upscale health club, there were going to be facials, massages, manicures and pedicures. We were going to have appetizers and drinks. There was a hot tub, steam room and sauna for our use. I, however, could not afford the evening since I've been unemployed for over a year. On top of that, I didn't have a swimsuit to partake in the hot tub, etc. I just did not want to sit around doing nothing, again.
People think unemployment is great. After all, you just sit around doing nothing and getting paid for it. What really happens is you sit around doing nothing because you can't afford anything while you get punched in the face everyday by help wanted ads that don't meet your qualifications or rejection letters that come in response to the ads you do respond to. Worse yet are the ads that you get no response from. It used to be considered proper etiquette to let people know if they were not going to be interviewed or hired but it doesn't happen much anymore. It gives one false hope.
So here I sit, doing nothing and making excuses to continue doing nothing so that I don't have to go do nothing in public.
